Embracing the future: Transitioning from Rokoko Studio to Studio Preview

Rokoko Studio is the software tool needed for visualizing, editing, and streaming motion capture data from our hardware tools like the Smartsuit Pro, Smartgloves, Coil Pro, and our face capture solutions. Over time, our journey has led us to a pivotal evolution: the introduction of Studio Preview. This new iteration isn’t just an update; it’s a complete reimagining designed to enhance performance, speed, and user experience.

Why the change?

In the early days of Rokoko, we prioritized speed and rapid feature development, using Unity as the front-end for Rokoko Studio, since that was the tool our founding developers knew best. While this allowed us to quickly iterate and push out new features, as we grew, we realized that Unity, being a game engine, wasn’t the most efficient solution for a tool like ours. The heavy CPU and battery demands, along with limitations in building a smooth user interface, led us to rethink our approach.

The birth of Studio Preview

Studio Preview is our answer to these challenges. By moving to a new, optimized tech stack, we’re not only improving performance and reducing the strain on the devices, but also ensuring that we have a robust foundation for future releases. Already, we’ve introduced exciting new features like loopable segments and a smoothing filter, thanks to this new framework.

How to get started

Rokoko Studio Preview requires a paid plan or trial for access. You can claim a free trial by creating a new Rokoko Team. Please make sure you have created a Rokoko ID first. Instructions for doing this can be found in this article. If you have already used your trial, please reach out to support@rokoko.com. We’re happy to help you get another trial to test it out.

What to expect going forward

The transition to Studio Preview will be a gradual one. We’re committed to ensuring that every feature you love in Rokoko Studio makes its way into Studio Preview, and we won’t sunset the existing Studio until we’re confident that the new version meets all your needs.
