Smartsuit Pro’s Locomotion Engine Just Got a Massive Upgrade: Here Are the Details

We’ve been listening closely to the feedback from our creator community - and we heard you loud and clear: the locomotion experience matters. Whether you’re capturing a subtle stroll, a frantic dance move, or a high-speed run, it should just work. No drifting toes, no jittery hips, no more feeling like there’s just “something off” about the poses.

Today, we’re announcing one of the most significant updates ever to the Smartsuit Pro’s locomotion engine. This release has been months in the making and has been a major focus for our co-founder Anders and the amazing capture tools team here at Rokoko.

This isn’t just a filter tweak - it’s a foundational upgrade that affects how your entire performance gets interpreted. Here’s what’s new:

Fine-tuned Kalman filter

The Kalman filter that underpins the locomotion engine has been carefully refined to improve motion prediction and blending. The result is a smoother, more accurate capture - especially noticeable during movement transitions.

Pose stabilization before footlocks

We’ve implemented a new stabilization step that occurs before the system even applies footlocks. This minimizes unwanted jitter and popping and inaccuracies in the hips and spine, particularly during subtle motions and idle states.

Improved floor alignment

The updated floor alignment model ensures that feet stay grounded and hips remain aligned. This significantly reduces foot dragging and drift, leading to more natural, grounded motion across different terrain types.

Auto-detection between foot lock models

The locomotion engine now intelligently detects and adjusts between various foot lock models - whether you’re standing, walking, running, or jumping. This ensures the system optimizes automatically to match your motion intent. 

Better handling of fast, short steps

High-tempo movements like dancing, combat, or quick direction changes now feel more responsive and controlled. Foot locks have been optimized to better accommodate these short, fast-paced steps without sacrificing accuracy.

These upgrades may be invisible in the UI, but they’re instantly felt in your animation results. With more stable, grounded, and intelligent motion capture, this update marks a major leap forward in realism and usability - especially for creators focused on nuanced or performance-heavy motion.
