3D Character Animation in Unreal

How to use 3D character animation and motion capture in Unreal

There are two different ways of working with motion capture in Unreal and get your data into the engine with Rokoko’s animation and mocap tools.  The first method is to export your recording in FBX or BVH from Rokoko Studio and import that to Unreal (and you have the option to include mesh, which is very helpful in Unreal).

The second and even better option is to use our Rokoko Studio Live plugin to stream your data directly into Unreal and use it in real-time on your own character in your environment.

Livestream your data directly onto your custom character in Unreal

With our Rokoko Studio Live plugin, you can stream your live or recorded motion capture data directly onto your custom character in Unreal. With this workflow, you can see your animations directly in your scene and adjust your performance in real-time. Jump straight into your own work and immerse yourself completely in your creation.

"It was nice how fast we could go from recording motion data and just quickly reviewing it on the laptop. We could just focus on the craft of getting those cool dance moves ready"

"It is very complicated to achieve realistic results by animating in a traditional way, so it’s essential to have a motion capture suit. The Rokoko Smartsuit offers an unbeatable quality for the price"

How are users working with motion capture and 3D character animation in Unreal Engine?
The Unreal Engine has been the preferred choice for high-end game development for a long time. Its real-time rendering capabilities and overall content creation tools are unmatched in the industry.

Recently, Epic Games (the company behind Unreal) has started focusing more of their efforts on making their tools more broadly accessible and more intuitive to all creators. Consequently, we are seeing a large uptick in usage across all segments.

With the recent release of Unreal 4.25, the character animation, virtual production, and real-time tools are so immensely powerful that you can now do things you've never before been able to. We've worked hard on making our real-time plugin fit with all the new features, and we've included mesh export in Rokoko Studio to make the workflow even easier.

Unreal is way ahead of any other tools when it comes to virtual production. With the live link and new set of real-time editing controls of focal length and sharpness, we have users creating absolutely incredible things.

We have created a series of videos to guide all those creators and artists who want to work with Rokoko in Unreal Engine. In our tutorials, we show everything from how to livestream your data with our native plugin to retargeting, as well as how to use Motion Library assets, how to leverage our virtual production and facial motion capture tools, and much more.

Unreal and Rokoko are a perfect combo for amazing real-time performances.
