How to use Smartsuit Pro data in Blender (2.8)

Upgraded to Blender 2.8 and not sure how to apply your Smartsuit Pro animations to your character? Check out this tutorial to learn how to animate your characters in Blender again!

This blog serves as a step-by-step guide for users who want to learn how to take animations created in Rokoko Studio and import them directly into Blender (2.8) for use. Follow along below as we walk you through how to export animations from Studio, import them inside of Blender and attach them to your custom characters.

Exporting From Studio

  • When you’re ready to export out your Smartsuit Pro recording, click the “Exporter” panel to bring up the “Export options” box
  • Most of the default information should remain untouched however, you have the option to adjust the following settings:
  • If Face Capture data is included, make sure that ‘Export face data’ is checked
  • If you have Virtual Production data, make sure “Export VP data” is checked
  • “Mimic file hierarchy” will export your files in the same hierarchy that they are in Studio
  • “Export Path” shows where the files will be exported out to
  • FBX is the only format that currently supports Face Capture
  • “FBX Settings” allows you to choose between ASCII or Binary types
  • “Version” allows you to choose which FBX version you’d like to export as
  • Once you have your settings set, click the “Export” button
  • Once done exporting, open Blender (2.8)

Importing Into Blender (2.8)

  • To import your character and animation:
  • Click ‘File’ > ‘Import’ > ‘FBX (.fbx)’
  • Locate the FBX file of your character/animation
  • Click on it then click the “Import FBX” button
  • If the textures on your character are not appearing after import:
  • Click the Viewport Shading icon at the top right of the 3D View
  • Click the one named ‘Rendered’
  • After it has rendered, click the Viewport Shading icon again and click Material
  • Rename the character and animation within the Hierarchy at the top right so that you know which is which
  • Right-click on your character within the Hierarchy
  • Hover your cursor over ‘ID Data’ and click ‘Rename’

Applying Animation

  • Create a new window and open the Action Editor:
  • Left-click and drag from the top-right corner of the 3D View to create a new window
  • With the new window created, click the ‘Editor Type’ icon in the top right of the new window, and select ‘Dope Sheet’
  • Once you’ve opened the Dope Sheet, click the dropdown menu named “Dope Sheet” at the top of the window and select “Action Editor”
  • Inside of the Action Editor, you can select between your animations to view all of the animation data
  • Scrubbing through the Action Editor plays the animation in the 3D View
  • To apply the animation to your character, click on the character inside of the Hierarchy
  • Click on the ‘Action Link’ button at the top of the window
  • Click the Armature of your animation
  • Once this is done, you can scrub the timeline at the bottom of the screen and the animation should be playing on your character
  • If you need to adjust the timeline so that it plays the entire animation:
  • Type the start and end frames within the Start and End fields on top of the timeline
  • Drag the slider bar located directly below the keyframes by clicking and dragging the ends of the slider bar
  • Drag it all the way to the right, or to the point where the last keyframe ends
  • Press the Play button to play the animation
  • If the animation plays slowly:
  • Click the ‘Playback’ drop down
  • Click the drop down named ‘No Sync’
  • Click ‘AV-Sync’
