How to Characterize your Animation Skeleton in MotionBuilder

In this guide, we will show you how to characterize the animation skeleton of your motion capture recording in MotionBuilder. This will allow you to retarget the skeleton on your exported animation file in order to apply it onto your custom 3D character.

Exporting from Rokoko Studio

When you’re ready to export your recorded animation from Rokoko Studio:

  • Select your animation and click the “export” button to bring up the “Export Options” box
  • Most of the default information should remain untouched, however you have the option to adjust the following settings:
  1. If you have Virtual Production data, make sure “Export VP Data” is checked
  2. “Mimic File Hierarchy” will export your files in the same hierarchy that they are in Studio
  3. “Export Path” shows where the files will be exported to
  4. Decide what file format you would like to export as FBX, BVH, CSV
  5. If FBX, decide whether you’d like to export as ASCII and Binary, decide on version
  6. “Skeleton” has four different options, for Motionbuilder you can select whichever you would like
  7. Once your settings are set, click “Export”

Characterizing your Skeleton in MotionBuilder

To Characterize your skeleton in MotionBuilder follow the following steps:

  • Import your animation skeleton from Rokoko Studio into a blank scene in MotionBuilder
  • Click “Skeleton” in the Character Controls Window under Define
  • Fill in the corresponding joint of your character with corresponding slot on the biped model in the Character Controls Window.
  1. For example: highlight the Hips joint, right click on the corresponding slot in the Character Controls Window, click “Assign Selected Bone”
  • Fill in the rest of the joints, and click on the padlock symbol in the Character Controls Window.
  • If you would like to save this as a template, click on the save button in the character controls window.

Note: Your character or skeleton needs to be in a perfect T-Pose. Facing the positive Z-Axis and the arms parallel with the X-Axis. If it is not, the characterization will not be valid.
